There’s Snow Business Like Snow Business

A short ferry-ride across the bay from Vancouver us the originally named North Vancouver. It is a very attractive area with well presented little houses all over looked by mountains that formed the location for today’s little adventure.Grouse Mountain is located about 3800 metres above sea level devoted to winter sports. We took a bus to the ferry terminus and I was totally impressed with the courtesy and helpfulness of the bus driver. The ferryride is only 12 minutes and like everything else about the transit system is very well run. The whole hour’s journey up the mountain on cost $2.25. Why can’t public transport in Perth be so well priced, clean and accessible.I expected Grouse Mountain to be a bit cartoonish and “Santa’s Grotto” but was encouraged by the number of serious looking skiers and snow boarders making their way up the hill.$35 seemed a bit steep as an entrance fee but the cable car up to the peak promised at learst a little excitement. When we got to the top it was like stepping out of teleported straight into another world.Everything was covered a blanket of soft, white snow. Around us people were sliding past on skis or ice skating. It was truly magic. We hired some snow shies and took a hike through the snow towards a peak called Dam Mountain. Despite the extra traction and support offered by the snow shoes we still fell or slid over. One particularly steep include proved too much for us and so covered in snow and laughing as we did our best Yeti impressions we headed down to the main area of the Mountain. Watching the snow boarders has inspired us to take our next holiday somewhere in the snow.Grouse Mountain proved to be well worth the entrance fee and easily the most fun we have had all holiday so far. It is conpletely well organized and not at all touristy. We loved it and I will always remember the day we spent in the snow.
